The CREST Awards are a well‑established programme from the British Science Association that empower students aged 3 to 19 through structured, student‑led STEM investigations.
- Organisers & Management: Delivered by the British Science Association, a UK registered charity founded in 1831, with support from partners like UK Research and Innovation and Urenco.
- Award Levels: Six progressive tiers—Star (3–7), SuperStar (7–11), Discovery (10–14), Bronze (11+), Silver (14+), and Gold (16+)—aligned with age and project complexity.
- Learning Framework: Projects emphasize real‑world context, problem‑solving, independent work, creativity, research, reflection, communication and teamwork.
- Fee Structure: Low-cost entry—typically £1 for Star/SuperStar, Discovery ~£3, Bronze ~£6, Silver ~£15, Gold ~£30 in the UK; slightly higher internationally; Wales had free fees funded through April 2025.
- Assessment & Guidance: Bronze level assessed by teachers; Silver and Gold externally assessed by expert assessors. Mentoring available for higher levels.
- Reach & Credibility: Operating since 1986, CREST engages tens of thousands of young people annually across UK schools and internationally; it's regarded as a gold‑standard STEM enrichment programme.
- Equity & Inclusion: Through grant programmes and resources, CREST aims to support young people from under‑resourced, minoritised or SEND backgrounds, widening access to STEM opportunities.
